The Tier I Provincials for Diving were held this past weekend in Nepean-Ottawa at the Nepean Sportsplex. The Kitchener Waterloo Diving Club attended this meet with 9 of their level one diver’s. To say we were successful is an understatement. Every diver walked away from that meet with a success in some way shape or form.
Starting with our youngest diver, Raine competed in the “E” division-age 9 and under. She finished 5th on both the 1 meter and 3 meter boards, achieving a personal best score on the 3 meter! Raine was also eligible to compete “D” – age 11 and under – and did so for her first time ever at a Tier I provincial. She came in 16th out of a field of 20 young divers. Way to go Raine for your first event here.
Up next we have the three musketeers- our three “D” boys in the 11 and under age category. All the boys dove in all three events, 1 meter, 3 meter and tower. Ali took silver on 1 meter, bronze on 3 meter, and 4th on the tower. Ali achieved a personal best on the 1 meter and the tower events. Andy, our next musketeer was 5th on the 1 meter, 4th on the 3 meter and 7th on the tower. Andy also achieved a personal best on the tower. Nate rounded out our three with a triple for his weekend. A triple gold that is! Nate took gold in all three events, a personal best on tower and broke the provincial record on 3 meter. What a great accomplishment!!
Mohamed, diving in “C” – age 12-13- came to provincials with a very specific task in mind. His goal was to qualify for nationals. No one has worked harder this season to accomplish a goal than he has. On the 1 meter, he did just that, taking 4th place with a score 30 points higher than he has ever had, and 14 points above national qualifying, achieving his goal with room to spare! On the 3 meter he placed 9th out of 15 divers.
Brett and Brawn dove “B” – ages 14-15. Once again the B divers were the competition to watch, with high scores, and intense competition. Brawn competed on the 1 meter placing 8th in this fierce competition with a personal best score. Brett took home three medals placing second on both 1 and tower and came home with bronze on 3 meter. On tower, Brett performed the most difficult dive of the whole competition, for his first time ever, coming away with straight 6.5 and a total score of 62.4 on that one dive!
C.J. dove A – age 16-18. This was C.J.’s first time in this age group at provincials, and he held his own against the older divers. He took home a hat trick – gold on the tower, silver on the 1 meter and bronze on the three meter.
Brett and C.J. competed 3 meter synchro. They dove beautifully, with synchro marks in the high 8’s and 9’s. They posted a personal best score of 325, taking gold. With this win, they were named Outstanding Synchro team, retaining their title for the 5th year in a row.
Kate dove in the open category – divers of all ages. She took gold the 1 meter with a personal best score for the season, and she placed 8th on the 3 meter.
At the closing of the meet, we had three of our divers named Outstanding Diver in their age category….
This honour went to Nate Grobe, C.J. Moore and Kate Brechun.
And to top the meet off, to put the icing on the cake, to put the gravy on the mash potatoes, our very own coach..
Rob Wells, was named Outstanding Coach of the Year.
The K|W Tier I team – we rock!
