Nepean Ottawa Diving Club Invitational, December 17th – 19th, 2010

C Boys 1 M finalThe beginning of the 2010/2011Competition Year has started with a bang!  The first Tier 1 event was held in Nepean December 17th to 19th, with the largest contingent of KWDC divers ever attending. Rob lead a team of 12 divers to this meet and, with the invaluable assistance of Emily, was able to keep his eyes on divers participating in almost every category and event.

The Tier 1 team has swelled to such a large number with the addition of several new divers – Raine, Aniko, Kevin, Gabriel, Brawn and Emily.

One criterion that distinguishes Tier 1 from Tier 2 is the need to obtain qualifying scores on each board at two different meets throughout the season.  These scores are set by Diving Plongeon Canada (DPC) and are based on the results set at the previous year’s Nationals.  If the diver meets these minimum targets, he/she   automatically qualifies to participate at National Juniors and/or Seniors.

For each diver, there were significant highlights at the Nepean Meet:

Our youngest divers, Raine and Kevin , had participated in tier 1 events last year but they both moved up to level D this year. Kevin performed an amazing 2 ½ on 3m, allowing him to finish 4th and qualify.  Raine had terrific 1 meter compulsories. Aniko, at her first tier 1 event, may have been the surprise of the meet, taking gold on both platform and 3m and making her qualifying scores as well.

For the C boys, Nate was a triple medal winner, taking gold on 1 meter and qualifying on all boards. Ali also qualified in all three events and displayed his best inward double on tower. Andy shone on his 2 ½ on the 3 meter, picking up qualifying scores on that board. Gabriel scored a bronze on 1 meter and made qualifying scores on 2 boards.

Brawn had an impressive start to the season and came close to qualifying. Mohamed was a podium finisher on both his boards and also very close to qualifying.

Emily came close to podium and qualifying. She was invaluable in keeping the team together on the deck, cheering on their team mates and ensuring they were all properly fed. Brett had his most successful A event ever, standing on the podium every time and is now fully qualified for summer and winter seniors. Despite a bad knee that has prevented CJ from fully competing at all of his eligible events, he had his most impressive 3 meter ever, cracking 500 points.
