Ontario Winter Games – Sudbury or Bust!

ani-and-raine1This year’s Ontario Games were held in the Muskoka region, and Sudbury, Ontario. Over 22 sports took part in the games over the course of 5 days. Diving, took place at the Laurentian University in Sudbury. The facility had only one 1 meter and one 3 meter board, along with a 5 meter and 7 meter platform but the divers made due and dove well, regardless. K|W sent 9 divers to the games, who had fun as well as stellar results.

The games began with opening ceremonies at the hotel, and the divers, bowlers, and various other sports were all excited to be there and start their competitions. The divers mingled with divers from the other teams, beginning with opening ceremonies and continuing throughout the weekend. Many new friendships were formed over the course of our time in Sudbury.

The organizers of the games- including many from the Ministry of Health and the City of Sudbury – put on an amazing weekend for our divers. The food was amazing, the schedule was adhered to, and the hotel was large, and comfortable.

At the pool our divers had the following results:

Our “D” girls – Raine and Aniko – dove in the largest group of divers. They both dove 1 meter and 3 meter – on 1 m, Aniko was 8th and Raine was 10th, and on three meter they placed 10th and llth, respectively.

Our “D boy, Jacob, dove 1 meter and placed 5th overall.

Our “C” divers were Paul and Alten. On the 1 meter Alten placed 4th and Paul placed 5th, then on the 3 meter Alten was 5th and Paul took home the bronze medal!

Our “B” divers were 4 – Brawn, Brayden, Brent and Abel. This was Abel’s first competition ever. He has only been diving for a few months, and he was able to attend the games with a 1 meter list. Brent, also new to the sport, was able to put together a tower list after only 1 week, so he dove in all three events – 1, 3 and tower.

On the 1 meter board Brent came away with gold, Brawn with Silver, Brayden with Bronze and Abel came away with 5th. On the 3 meter board, it was Brent again with gold, Brayden with bronze and Brawn in 4th. Brent, our only tower diver, rounded out the weekend with gold number three.

The weekend was an incredible success, both in the pool and out, and the divers can hardly wait for the next games to come around.
